PAXTON, Mass. – Senior Casey Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) led all players with 12 points while also grabbing nine rebounds to lead the Roger Williams University women's basketball team past Anna Maria College, 59-34, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at The Fuller Activities Center on Tuesday night.
The Hawks improve to 6-16 overall and 4-5 in the TCCC, while the AMCATS drop to 3-18 on the season and 0-10 in conference play. It was “Think Pink” night at AMC, with the AMCATS raising money for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
The Hawks came out of the gate scoring the game's first eight points, getting consecutive baskets from senior Jennifer Youngquist (Sandwich, Mass.). From there the game became a defensive struggle as both teams struggled to score for the remainder of the half. The AMCATS would close the gap to four after a layup by sophomore Emily Nugent (Worcester, Mass.), but the Hawks would regain their eight-point advantage, going into the locker room leading 19-11.
The Hawks shot just 7-37 (18.9%) during the period, but forced the AMCATS into 19 first half turnovers to build their lead.
During the half the Wachusett Travel Basketball team made up of fifth grade girls thrilled the crowd with an eight minute scrimmage.
Roger Williams went on a 24-2 run to open the second half, with Casey Anderson and senior Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.) combining for 13 points during the stretch. The Hawks defense continued to pressure the AMCATS and forced them into 18 more turnovers in the second half. RWU also improved their shooting, knocking down 16-40 (40%) from the floor in the half and led by as many as 32 points.
The difference in the game was 39 turnovers by AMC leading to 36 Roger Williams' points.
Anderson paced the Hawks with her near double-double while freshman Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) collected nine points, nine rebounds, and two blocks in the win. Freshman forward Ryan Weekes (Worcester, Mass.) also had a solid game with eight points and eight boards.
Junior Maggie Sielawa (Webster, Mass.) led AMC with a team-high nine points and nine rebounds, while freshman Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) scored eight points on 3-5 shooting (2-3 3-pointers) and grabbed seven boards.
The Hawks will play again on Saturday when they host Regis College at 1:00 pm. The AMCATS will return to the court on Saturday as well, hosting New England College at 1:00 pm as part of their “Sea of Red” Valentine's Day event.
