Curry bumps Women’s Hoops out of eighth with win

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I.Curry College moves into sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot with a 68-61 win over the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team.

Though the Colonels led for most of the game, Curry was unable to put enough distance between themselves and the Hawks until the closing minutes of the game. RWU trailed by no more than seven over the course of the first half, even taking a brief 10-9 lead on a three-pointer by Carly Spagnola (Millbrook, N.Y.)

Curry would eventually regain the advantage on a three by Sarah Walker to make it 12-14 with 15:10 to play in the first half. From there, the Colonels maintained their lead, eventually going into the break up by a 35-28 score.

In the second half, the Hawks remained within striking range, trailing by ten at one point but pulling within three four times in the period. Towards the end of the half, RWU looked to be getting over the hump when Casey Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) made it a 54-55 game with 4:55 to play.

That would be as close as the Hawks would get as Curry rattled off eight straight points, capped off by a three by Jennifer Olejnik to put the Colonels up 63-54 with 2:12 to play. Danielle Perrault (Ridgefield, Conn.) gave the Hawks one last gasp with a three with 41 seconds to play with pull RWU within four, but a pair of free throws by Emma Dickson helped put the cap on the game.

Christina Sancinito led all scorers with 26 points to go along with her eight rebounds. Walker finished with ten for the Colonels with Olejnik added eight points and three boards.

Spagnola nearly finished with a double-double, going for 14 points and eight rebounds, with Anderson also scoring 14 for the Hawks. Perrault had 11 points for RWU, while Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.) chipping in with ten points and eight boards.

Curry (9-15, 5-7 TCCC) closes out the regular season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Endicott, while Roger Williams (8-16, 4-8 TCCC) hosts Eastern Nazarene College Saturday at 1:00 p.m., where the team will hold its annual Think Pink Day.
