Women’s Hoops closes out season with double OT thriller

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team wrapped up its season in exhilarating fashion with a 91-88 win in double-overtime over Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks found themselves trailing for most of the game, down by 12 at halftime and 11 with 3:02 left in the game. Despite having to play from behind, the Hawks rallied from an eight-point deficit with only 1:25 to play to force overtime. Danielle Perrault (Ridgefield, Conn.) played a huge role in the Hawk comeback with a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to bring the game to a 68-70 game with 46 seconds to play.

On the ensuing Crusader possession, Jennifer Youngquist (Sandwich, Mass.) forced a turnover, allowing Perrault to get to the line with 31 seconds to play. She sank one of the two free throws in the double bonus to inch RWU within a point of the comeback.

Amber Burns had a chance to extend Eastern Nazarene's lead to three after being fouled with eight seconds left, but only hit one of her two free throws to make it a two-point game. After a Hawk timeout, Perrault continued her clutch shooting by hitting a jumper that bounced high in the air off the back of the rim before dropping in to knot the game a 71 apiece with four seconds left to send the game in overtime.

The Hawks carried their momentum into the extra period, scoring the first five points of OT. Yet the Crusaders continued to fight back, as Christine Tucker's (Antioch, Calif.) jumper with 1:30 to go made it an 80-76 game. Jessica Schoppee (Scarborough, Maine) aided the rally with a three-point play with 53 seconds to play.

The Crusader comeback looked to be complete when Tucker earned her way to the line with 11 seconds left and promptly sank both free throws to give Eastern Nazarene an 81-80 lead. Yet the Hawks were able to force a second OT after Carly Spagnola (Millbrook, N.Y.) went coast-to-coast on the inbound, going hard to the basket and drawing the foul. Spagnola sank the first but missed the potential game-winning free throw to send the game into a second extra period.

In the second OT, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead on a jumper by Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) and proceeded to protect their advantage. The Crusaders remained close towards the end of the period, making it 89-88 with Amanda Remmel's (Allentown, Pa.) three-pointer at the 1:07 mark. The Hawk defense kept Eastern Nazarene from rallying all the way back, with Nicole Atchue (North Grafton, Mass.) forcing a turnover with 20 seconds left. Then on the final Crusader possession, Youngquist blocked Remmel's potential game-winning three with five seconds to play, followed by Perrault making the steal in the closing seconds.

Perrault finished the game with 25 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks. Seniors Youngquist, Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.), Casey Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.), and Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) all closed their careers out with solid games. Babin finished with her sixth double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Anderson went for 15 points and seven rebounds, with Criss adding four points and three boards. Though Youngquist was held scoreless, she contributed a career-high 11 assists.
