BRISTOL, R.I. – A 31-point effort by Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) helped push Salve Regina University past the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball, as the Seahawks defeated RWU 91-73 Wednesday evening.
Phillips had the hot hand in the first half, scoring 25 points in the period on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. She set the pace for a high-scoring first period for the Seahawks in which the team shot 65.4 percent, going 17-of-26 including 11-of-12 from the free throw line.
Despite Salve Regina's proficiency from the field, the Seahawks' 49 points only gave them a three-point lead at the break. The Hawks had their best shooting performance in the first half on the season, hitting 17-of-31 in the period, including nine three-points on 12 attempts. Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) led the Hawks in the half with 12 points, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
RWU regained the lead in the opening two minutes on a pair of treys by #Kate Malenczak# (Sayville, N.Y.) and Jennifer Youngquist (Sandwich, Mass.). to go up by a 52-49 margin. At that point, the Hawks went cold, missing their next six shots over a four-minute stretch while the Seahawks used a 14-0 run to take a commanding 11-point lead. From there, Salve Regina maintained its double-digit advantage over the course of the game to earn the win.
Allegra Lovoy (Charlestown, R.I.) finished with 25 points and a game-high nine assists for Salve Regina, while Olivia Browning (Trumbull, Conn.) added 11 points and four boards off the bench.
Criss finished 18 points for RWU, while Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.) added nine points and seven rebounds. Malenczak scored a season-high 16 points to go along with two steals and two assists.
Salve Regina (14-6, 6-2 TCCC) hosts Colby-Sawyer Saturday at 1:00 p.m., while Roger Williams (5-15, 3-5 TCCC) will travel to the University of New England on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game
