Strong 4th quarter leads Warriors to 10-7 win

NORWICH, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to snap a 5-5 tie en route to a 10-7 non-conference win over Roger Williams University Saturday afternoon at Norwich Free Academy.

Roger Williams (2-1) got a man-up goal from senior Dave Hurley  (Hanover, MA) 17 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the match at 5-5 before Eastern (2-1) responded with three goals in less than three minutes to assume an 8-5 lead with just under 12 minutes left in the match.

Junior Maxim Fantl (West Hartford) netted his second goal of the match with a goal from the right side of the cage to give Eastern the lead for good, 6-5 with 13:30 left. Sophomore Eric Vasil (Southington) won the ensuing faceoff and fed senior Matt Savage (Southington) six seconds later to make it 7-5, and sophomore Brian Fechtmann (Levittown, NY) pushed the lead to 8-5 off a feed from Matt Savage with 11:45 remaining.

Hurley improved his team-leading scoring total to 13 points by scoring four goals and assisting on another. He connected on four of his six shots in the match. Defensemen Glenn Pacitti (Mastic, NY) a junior, and senior Chris Mecozzi (Wilton) each had three ground balls to lead Roger Williams.

After scoring only two goals in the middle two periods, Eastern exploded for five in the final quarter, when the Hawks stayed close by scoring two of their three goals in the frame on extra-man opportunities.

Eastern remains unbeaten (5-0) in games played at Norwich Free Academy and remains undefeated (4-0) against Roger Williams in this series which dates back to 1997. It was the first meeting between the clubs in ten years.

Eastern  hosts Mount Ida College Wednesday at 4 p.m. RWU hopped on a flight after the game, traveling to Orlando, Fla., to face its next opponent, Centenary College, Tuesday at 7 p.m.
