Softball sweeps pair of games in Florida

FT. MYERS, Fla.The Roger Williams Softball team came away with two wins Wednesday afternoon, defeating Delaware Valley College by a slim 1-0 margin, then beating Bowdoin College 4-2 later in the day.

The Hawks got their lone run against Delaware Valley in the top of the seventh inning when Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) hit a two-out triple to give RWU only its fourth base runner of the day. She was followed by Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.), who knocked in Pirez with a game-winning RBI single. RWU would hold on with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the frame for the win.

Alexandra Sera (Newton, Mass.) tossed the complete game shutout, tossing seven scoreless innings allowing only three hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Hawks began the second game of the day with a sacrifice fly by Pirez to score Renee Bilotti (Bristol, R.I.) and give RWU a 1-0 in the top of the first. The score would remain as such until the top of the fifth, when RBI singles by Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.), and Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) stretched the Hawk lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jamie Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) cut the Polar Bears' deficit in half with a two-RBI double, bringing home teammates Emma Powers (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Hillary Smyth (Hollis, N.H.). The offense ended there for Bowdoin, as the Polar Bears were held to only one hit over the final two innings.

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) earned the win, scattering eight hits over seven innings of work with four strikeouts.

Roger Williams (4-2) will play Fredonia College and Lasell College Thursday morning.
