BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team extended its winning streak to six games in a row Thursday afternoon after defeating Fitchburg State College by scores of 9-1 and 9-7.
The Hawks led most of the game after taking an early 1-0 lead in the first when Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch. Caprice would go on to score Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the second inning with an RBI single.
Trailing 3-0, the Falcons were able to get on the board in the fifth inning off of Ashley McKinnon's (Raynham, Mass.) RBI single. Yet RWU would get the run right back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by #Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.).
The Falcons had a chance in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to one, as Kelly Cummings (Natick, Mass.) had a deep two-out drive to left field with a runner at first that just hooked foul. The potential rally ended on the next pitch as she struck out swinging.
Roger Williams kept the offense going in the fifth inning, scoring five runs in the frame to take the shortened game.
Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) got the win, giving up one run in six innings. Caprice finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass.) took the loss, allowing three runs in four innings. McKinnon collected two hits and an RBI for the Falcons.
In the second game, RWU jumped out to an early lead after putting up six runs in the first inning, two of which came off the bat of Teves's two-RBI single. Fitchburg State answered in the top of the second with three runs to cut the Hawks' lead in half, highlighted by McKinnon's two-RBI double.
RWU responded in the bottom of the inning by getting those three runs right back. Teves collected her second two-RBI hit of the day in the frame to put RWU up 9-3. Yet the Falcons continued to fight, putting up four runs in the fourth inning to make in a two-run game. Amanda Quin (Townsend, Mass.) had a sacrifice fly that gave Fitchburg State its seventh run.
The rally ended there for the Falcons, as the team was held to two hits over the final three innings, with the Hawks holding on for the win.
Alexandra Sera (Newtown, Mass.) picked up the win in relief for Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.), allowing two runs in the final four innings. Teves finished 2-for-4 with four RBI. Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.), Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.), and Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.) each scored two runs for RWU.
Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine) gave up nine runs in six innings in the loss. McKinnon went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass.) and Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass.) had two hits and an RBI apiece.
Roger Williams (10-4) will head up to Western New England College Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game, while Fitchburg State (3-10) will be at Westfield State Saturday at 12 noon.
