Men’s Lacrosse wins ’09 season opener

NEWTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team opened up its 2009 campaign with a 12-3 win over Lasell College Saturday afternoon.

 

Junior Domenic Celeste (Jupiter, Fla.) started things off for the Hawks with a goal at the 8:27 mark in the first period. Senior Dave Hurley (Hanover, Mass.) followed up three minutes later by taking a Shawn Cleary (Homer, N.Y.) pass and scoring RWU's second goal of the game.

 

Joe Healy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Hurley would add a goal each in the second period to give Roger Williams a 4-0 advantage going into halftime.

 

The Hawks had a 5-0 lead in the third period before Brandon Keith (Marston Mills, Mass.) of Lasell put the Lancers on the board with a goal less than two minutes into the period. Though teammate Chris Bulkley (Groton, Conn.) would add another goal with under four minutes to play in the period, Lasell still trailed RWU 6-2 going into the final period.

 

In the fourth period, the Hawks pulled away from Lasell, outscoring the Lancers 6-1 in the quarter. RWU got a pair of scores from Beaver Barone (Weymouth, Mass.) and goals from Hurley, Mike Horan (Acton, Mass.), James Turenne (Bristol, R.I.), and Rob Andreozzi (Bristol, R.I.).

 

Barone led all scorers with three goals, while Hurley added two. Keith finished with two goals for Lasell.

 

Roger Williams (1-0) will take on the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Monday at 4:00 p.m., while Lasell (0-1) hosts Tufts University Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
