PAXTON, Mass. – Freshman Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) hurled a complete-game shutout and junior Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) had three hits, four runs batted in, and a solo homer to lead the Roger Williams University softball team to a sweep over Anna Maria College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
The victories improve the Hawks to 18-12 overall and 10-6 in the TCCC, while the AMCATS fall to 7-20 on the season and 6-8 in Conference play.
Teves paced the offensive attack for the Hawks going 2-for-3 with three RBI in game one and adding a solo homer and two runs scored in game two. Freshman Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) led all players with four hits on the day and scored three runs, while sophomore Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) added three hits including a home run. Doolin was terrific in her start in game one, tossing seven shutout innings while striking out 13 batters and allowing just four hits to improve to 12-5 on the year. Freshman Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) earned the victory on the mound in game two, going seven strong innings while allowing three runs on seven hits to even her record at 2-2 on the year.
Freshman Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) led the charge for the AMCATS driving in two runs on two hits including a mammoth home run in game two. Sophomore Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.), freshman Samantha Putis (Charlton, Mass.), and sophomore Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) each added two hits for Anna Maria.
The Hawks capitalized off an early AMC error to score three unearned runs in the first inning of the opening game, including a two-run single by Teves.
The Hawks added a run in the second on a solo shot by Grill, and got an additional run in the fifth when Teves delivered another RBI single.
That proved to be more than enough for Doolin who was dominating in her seven innings of work, striking out 13 AMC batters to capture the 5-0 victory.
The Hawks scored first in the second game of the twin bill as well, getting four runs on just two hits, including an RBI double by senior Renee Bilotti (Bristol, R.I.) and yet another run scoring single by Grill.
After adding a run in the fourth on a solo homer from Teves, the Hawks blew it open with three more in the fifth.
The AMCATS tried to claw their way back with a two-run blast from Moroski in the fifth and another run in the sixth, but it wasn't enough.
Broughton set the AMCATS down in order in the seventh to solidify the 9-3 win.
The Hawks will play again on Wednesday when they host Coast Guard at 3:00 pm. The AMCATS will also take the field again on Wednesday, hosting Endicott College in a Conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
