BRISTOL, R.I.- RWU sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded 18 saves while allowing just two goals in Saturday's Men's Lacrosse 5-2 regular season finale win over visiting Gordon College.
The strong RWU defense, currently ranked 16th in the nation, held the Fighting Scots scoreless in both the second and fourth quarters despite a combined 17 shots. Gordon finished the game with the 45-36 edge in shots and scored the first goal of the game on a shot by sophomore Jodan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON) at 7:28 of the first quarter.
RWU sophomore James Turenne (Bristol, R.I.) evened the score at 1-1 at 8:49 of the second quarter before classmate Drew Smith (Blue Point, N.Y.) put the Hawks ahead just 2:29 later.
Midway through the third quarter Gordon junior Timothy Mack (Columbus, Ohio) tied the game with an unassisted tally before RWU senior midfielder Sean Benner (Narberth, Pa.) scored the eventual game winner with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter.
The Hawks defense stood strong in the fourth while sophomore Drew Smith (Blue Point, N.Y.) assisted on two early fourth-quarter goals to Justin Leddy (Manasquan, N.J.) and Beaver Barone (Weymouth, Mass.), respectively, providing the 5-2 cushion. The game's final 12:45 remained scoreless, despite numerous extra-man opportunities for both teams.
Gordon goalkeeper Wayne Terry (Chatfont, Pa.) finished the game with 15 saves and five goals allowed in 60 minutes. The outcome secured a seventh-place regular-season TCCC finish for Fighting Scots, which leads to a quarterfinal road contest Tuesday at No. 2 seed Endicott College.
The win improves the Hawks' record to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the conference. The Hawks host No. 6 Wentworth Institute of Technology Tuesday in a 2 p.m. quarterfinal contest.
