Colonels split doubleheader with Softball

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Softball came away with one win against Curry College in a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference games Sunday afternoon, taking the first game 9-4 and falling 4-6 in eight innings in the second.

Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) got things started for the Hawks in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run to left field, bringing in Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) and Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) to put RWU up 3-0. Roger Williams would continue the scoring in the second inning, putting up another three-spot on an RBI double by Jessie Lauze (Hopkinton, Mass.) and a two-RBI single by Castro.

Down 0-6 in the third inning, the Colonels would put sizeable dent into the deficit, scoring four runs in the inning to come within two. Alysia DiMuzio (Quincy, Mass.) knocked a two-run home run in the frame, along with Krysten Hunt's RBI double as part of the Colonel rally.

That would be as close as Curry would get in the inning, with the Hawks extending its lead by adding three more runs in the fourth inning, capped off by a two-RBI single by Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.). The five-run lead would be more than enough for RWU to hold on for the win.

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) pitched seven innings, giving up four runs (two earned) and striking out nine in the win. Pirez finished 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, with Castro adding two hits, two runs, and two RBI.

Ashley Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) took the loss, allowing eight runs in 3.1 innings of work. Lauren Tobey (Lynn, Mass.) and Christina Sancinito (Wakefield, Mass.) each had two hits and a run scored in the game.

In the second game, the Colonel offense went to work early in the game, scoring three runs off of six hits in the top of the first to grab a quick 3-0 lead. The Hawks got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning on Burke's bases-loaded walk. Yet in the top of the second, DiMuzio singled in Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.) who led off the inning with a triple, to go back up by three.

Pirez was able to bring the Hawks within two on an RBI triple in the third before RWU mounted a late rally in the bottom of the sixth. Castro was able to tie the game at four apiece for the Hawks with a two-out, two-run single with runners at second and third.

The hit would ultimately send the game into extra innings, where Curry regained the lead in the eighth off a pair of RBI hits by Kelsey Bryant (South Portland, Maine) and Jackman.  A 1-2-3 inning for the Hawks clinched the split for the Colonels.

Amanda Peters earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings of relief with five strikeouts. Jackman finished with three hits, two runs, and an RBI, while DiMuzio was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.

Doolin took the loss after coming into the game in the seventh and giving up both runs in the eighth. Caprice had three hits and two RBI for the Hawks, with Pirez adding two hits and an RBI.
