BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball moved to .500 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with a pair of wins against Regis College Tuesday afternoon by the scores 7-2 and 5-2.
Ashley Paolini (Epping, N.H.) led off the first game by getting on via a throwing error, stealing second, and eventually scoring on a Hope Benjamin (Rochester, Mass.) RBI single. The one-run Pride led lasted an inning and a half, when Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) and #Renee Bilotti# (Bristol, R.I.) scored a pair of runs for the Hawks in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 advantage.
RWU added another run in the fourth on Teves' RBI infield single, then put three more on the board in the fifth. Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.) came through in the inning with a two-run single to score Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) and Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.).
The Pride would get one more run in the top of the sixth inning when Katie Bradford (Medway, Mass.) singled in Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif.) but could not plate another runner before the Hawks got the win.
Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) picked up the win, pitching seven innings and giving up six hits and two runs while striking out eight. Teves finished 3-for-3 from the dish with a run and an RBI, while Burke added two hits, a run, and three RBI.
Kendra Abram (Acushnet, Mass.) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) in six innings. Luquet went 2-for-3, with Benjamin adding a hit, an run scored, and an RBI.
In the second game, the Hawks struck first, getting two runs from Jessie Lauze (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Bilotti in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Roger Williams would add three more runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Teves' two-RBI double to left field.
The five-run cushion would be enough for Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) to earn her first victory as a Hawk. Broughton held the Pride scoreless over the first four innings, before Shannon Hurley (Billerica, Mass.) and Kristen Tavares (Acushnet, Mass.) scored in the fifth and sixth inning, respectively. Broughton went the distance, giving up two runs and five hits while striking out five.
Offensively for the Hawks, Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, with Lauze, Teves, and Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) each getting two hits.
For the Pride, Tavares was tagged for all five runs in six innings of work. Benjamin had a two-hit game, while Luquet and Paolini each had an RBI.
Roger Williams (13-9, 5-5 TCCC) will take on Rhode Island College Thursday at 4:00 p.m. while Regis (3-18, 1-11 TCCC) plays Bay Path College Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
