Lacrosse takes OT Thriller over Salve Regina

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. — Senior attack Packy Markham (Cutchogue, N.Y.) scored three goals including the game-winner 32 second into overtime as Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse dealt Salve Regina University its first league loss and ended the Seahawks' overall win streak at eight games.

Salve Regina (9-2; 5-1 TCCC) trailed by three goals halfway through the fourth quarter before sophomore attack Brendan Rooney [West Newton, Mass.] scored three unanswered goals to knot the game at 8-8 with 5:30 left on the clock. Both teams had great chances to take a lead in the final two minutes, but two Seahawk shots went wide and Salve Regina goalie Brian Walker [Marshfield, Mass.] made a sensational stop in the closing seconds of a Joe Healy [Port Jefferson, N.Y.] shot.

"Congratulations to both teams for an outstanding contest," said Seahawk head coach Patrick Cooney, who has experience as the head coach on the other side of this rivalry. "We did a good job coming back in fourth after tough third quarter. They did a good job with the zone in the second half, made us be more patient."

Healy scored his team's first three goals as Roger Williams (7-3; 4-2 TCCC) built a 3-1 lead. Salve Regina chipped away and took its only lead of the contest (4-3) when freshman Brendan Carroll [Garden City, N.Y.] scored two goals in a span of 22 seconds at the 12:14 mark in the second quarter. Ten minutes later, Markham made it a 4-all game going into halftime.

Roger Williams owned the third quarter with goals from Healy, Sean Benner [Narberth, Pa.], and Markham. Salve Regina got one back before the end of the period as sophomore Evan Gates [Ridge, N.J.] scored his seventh goal of the season.

The Seahawks, perfect on 10 clear attempts in the first half, failed on four in the second. Healy made it a three-goal lead early in the fourth before Rooney went on his tear.

Both teams are in action after the Easter break. Salve Regina travels to league-leading Western New England College on Wednesday while Roger Williams plays at non-league opponent Trinity College in Hartford.
