PROVIDENCE, R.I. — No. 23 Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader from Roger Williams to improve to 22-2 in collegiate softball action at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Thursday afternoon. RIC has now won 16 consecutive games, while the Hawks, which were shutout in back-to-back contests for the first time this season, see their record drop to 13-11.
With the victories, Rhode Island College completes a sweep of the Ocean State, having gone a perfect 6-0 against Roger Williams, Johnson & Wales and Salve Regina this spring.
Rhode Island College took the first game, 4-0, as sophomores Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) and Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) combined to hold the Hawks to three hits. Neece threw the first 3.1, before Berard came in to set down each of the 11 batters she faced to earn her sixth win (6-1).
Junior right fielder Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while sophomore third baseman Trish Koutsulis (Peoria, AZ) knocked in another run. Sophomore first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. RWU freshman pitcher Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, NY) took the loss (8-5), allowing four runs on 11 hits.
The Anchorwomen completed the sweep with a 7-0 win in the nightcap. RIC put two up in the first, led by a Panarelli RBI double. Sophomore shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) put the game out of reach in the fifth with a three-run blast (2) to left center field. Junior pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) earned her team-leading 10th (10-0) win of the year, allowing three hits in five innings before giving way to Berard who once again slammed the door shut with six strikeouts. Roger Williams' junior starter Alexandra Sera (Newton, MA) took the loss (4-4).
RIC sophomore left fielder Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while classmate second baseman Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) and freshman third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH) each registered multiple hits (2-for-4; 2-for-3) with a run scored.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play tomorrow afternoon at Keene State, while Roger Williams will host Wentworth.
