Women’s Basketball holds off Colby-Sawyer for win

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team staved off a late rally by Colby-Sawyer College to come away with a 66-61 victory over the Chargers Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

After a first half that saw four ties and six lead changes, Roger Williams built its 37-33 halftime advantage to 13 in the first six minutes of the second period. The Hawks built the advantage to 58-43, a 15-point lead with 10:20 to play that was their largest of the game.

Yet Colby-Sawyer refused to quit, as the Chargers pulled off a 18-3 run over the next nine minutes on the strength of the post play of Sammi Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) and Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.), getting easy layups down low. The duo combined for eight points over the stretch, with Taylor Desanty (North Adams, Mass.) capping off the rally with a pair of fastbreak layups to knot the game at 61 with 1:10 to play.

Trailing 62-61, Colby-Sawyer had a chance to take the lead with 27 seconds left after forcing a Hawk turnover, yet Duffy committed a turnover of her own on the ensuing Charger possession, forcing Colby-Sawyer to foul. With the Chargers under the penalty, it took 12 seconds to get their sixth foul, but another Hawk turnover gave Colby-Sawyer another opportunity to regain the lead. Unfortunately for Colby-Sawyer, a traveling violation gave the Hawks right back.

After Carly Spagnola (Millbrook, N.Y.) knocked down a pair of free throws with ten seconds left, Colby-Sawyer looked poised to complete the comeback attempt, yet the Chargers committed their third turnover of the final minute after another traveling call on the inbound. Danielle Perrault (Ridgefield, Conn.) hit both ends of a 1-and-1 after a Colby-Sawyer foul to secure the win for Roger Williams.

Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) had one of her best all-around games of the season, going for 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) added 12 points and five boards, with Perrault and Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) contributing eight points apiece off the bench.

Lehr and Duffy each notched double-doubles in the game, with Lehr going for 16 points and 15 rebounds and Duffy adding 12 points and 11 boards. Desanty scored a game-high 18 points off the pine.

Roger Williams (8-11, 4-3 TCCC) travels down south to Newport, Rhode Island Wednesday evening for a 6:00 p.m. matchup against in-state conference rival Salve Regina, while Colby-Sawyer (7-12, 4-3 TCCC) will play at Endicott on Wednesday, also at 6:00 p.m.
