Women’s Soccer beats Eastern Nazarene 2-0 to extend TCCC winning streak

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Devon Leighton (Scarborough, Maine) and Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass) scored second-half goals as Roger Williams extended their perfect Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) record to 12-0-0 after defeating Eastern Nazarene College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Many fans gathered around Bayside Field to watch these two TCCC foes clash as part of RWU's Homecoming Weekend, and they certainly weren't disappointed with an action-packed game. The Hawks had plenty of early chances to put the ball in the net, but Eastern Nazarene freshman goalkeeper Lisa Clark (West Deptford, N.J.) was able to thwart all six of RWU's first-half bids on goal. Though the Hawks held the advantage in terms of shots, a determined Eastern Nazarene team gave them nothing to show for their efforts, as the teams headed into the break scoreless.

Roger Williams came flying out of the gates in the second half, and were rewarded for their persistence in the 67th minute. Alexa Maher (Hopewell, N.J.) sent in a cross from the right into the box, where a waiting Clark was able to get a hand on the ball and punch it away from the goal. Unfortunately for Eastern Nazarene, the loose ball found the foot of Leighton, who sent the ball into the net from twelve yards away to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge with 23:46 left in the game.

The Hawks then had several chances to extend their lead. Leighton almost scored again three minutes later, though the ball was snared by Clark at the last second. Clark also denied junior Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) in close with 15:44 left to keep the deficit at one goal.

However, Marston, who had earlier shot just wide of Clark's left-hand post, would find the net to seal the win. After picking the ball up in the box, she dinked a beautiful effort over Clark and into the net from 12 yards to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead with 11:04 left. From there, Roger Williams was able to run out the clock and pick up another TCCC win.

Sophomore Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y.) needed only one save in picking up the win, while Clark compiled a whopping 13 stops in the setback.

Roger Williams (13-3-0, 12-0-0 TCCC) are next in action Monday at home against Wesleyan College at 3:30 p.m., while Eastern Nazarene (5-8-2, 3-7-1 TCCC) host the University of New England Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
