Overtime goal pushes Women’s Soccer to TCCC Championship Gane

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – An overtime goal by Noelle Marston (Kingston, R.I.) in the opening minutes of the first overtime period helped propel the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team back to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Game, as the top-seeded Hawks defeated the University of New England 2-1 Tuesday afternoon.

Marston was fed the ball inside the box by junior classmate Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) and dribbled her way around a pair of Nor'Easter defenders before being challenged by UNE keeper Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.). Marston was able to push a shot just past Woodworth and into the left corner for the golden goal.

All of the scoring in the game came after the first period, with Roger Williams notching the first score of the afternoon. Alexa Maher (Hopewell, N.J.) served a free kick in the 55th minute in the box towards Fusaro, who deflected it off her body to Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) behind her. Pendleton was able to convert the shot to the left corner to give RWU the lead.

The Hawks' lead wouldn't last long, as the Nor'Easters tied the game less than four minutes later in the 59th minute. Junior Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) served a beautiful long ball that bounced in front of freshman Morgan Jensen (New Hartford, Conn.) and a pair of Hawk defenders. Jensen outran the two, bounced the ball off her chest on a hop, and ran down the middle towards the goal. Hawk keeper Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y.) ran out to try and meet Jensen, but Jensen put a shot before McGee could get there. The shot deflected off of McGee's hand and slowly rolled into the net before the trailing defenders could clear the ball.

Both teams had opportunities to close the game out in regulation. In the 62nd minute, Casey Scott (North Adams, Mass.) stole the ball and nearly had a breakaway for UNE before being stopped by Kristen Metcalf (Londonderry, N.H.). In the final five minutes of the game, Woodworth stopped a breakaway shot from the corner by Marston and then watched as a cross to a wide-open Devon Leighton (Scarborough, Maine) sailed just past her. In the end, the overtime score proved to be the deciding factor.

McGee picked up her 16th win of the year, making three saves in the game, while Woodworth stopped ten shots on the day for the University of New England.

The win for Roger Williams advances the Hawks to the TCCC Championship for the fourth time in five years and the first time since 2008, when RWU defeated Endicott 1-0 to clinch its first TCCC Championship in school history.

Roger Williams (16-4-0) will host #2 Endicott College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Endicott defeated #3 Western New England College 4-1 earlier in the day. The University of New England concludes its season with an overall record of 12-7-0.
