BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball earned a berth to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship match for the second straight season after a 3-0 win over the University of New England Thursday evening by the scores 25-22, 25-17, 25-22.
In the first game, Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) opened the game for Roger Williams with one of her six service aces on the night. From there, the Hawks led wire-to-wire. The Nor'Easters made it close towards the end of the game, with a Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) service ace making it 22-24 in favor of RWU, but Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) closed out the game with a kill on the following rally.
After the Hawks scored the first point in the second game, UNE stepped up its play and ran off a 9-3 run, capped off by a block by Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, N.H.). After a Hawk timeout, RWU came back to tie the game at ten, then followed with an 11-3 run to go up 21-13. Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.) would put RWU up 2-0 with a service ace to close out the game.
The third game saw the Hawks jump out on top once again, taking a 5-2 lead before the Nor'Easters came back to tie the match at nine. Roger Williams would score nine of the next 12 points to take a six-point advantage, leading to a Nor'Easter timeout. UNE would mount one last rally towards the end of the match, with a Kristen Edwards kill pulling the Nor'Easters within one (23-22). Yet a Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) kill gave the Hawks match point, leading to the final rally.
On the ensuing point, Twarog dug out a hard attack by Edwards that nearly went out of play but bounced off a façade towards the ceiling, leading to a heads up play by Gonzalez-Yañez to keep the ball in play and eventually get the ball over the net, which lead to a Nor'Easter attack error and gave the Hawks the match.
Twarog led the Hawks with 14 kills on 30 swings with only three errors. Luczynski added 12 kills and two block assists, while Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) dug out a game-high 22 balls. Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) finished with 34 assists and 12 digs.
Edwards went for 11 kills for the Nor'Easters in the match, while Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) led UNE in assists and digs with 21 and 18, respectively. Curran and Cashell each added six kills.
Roger Williams (28-5) looks to defend its 2009 title Saturday in the TCCC Championship against second-seeded Endicott College in a rematch of last year's semifinal match which RWU won, 3-0. Endicott advances to Saturday's Finals after defeating third-seeded Colby-Sawyer College 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 27-25) earlier in the evening. The University of New England closes out the regular season with a record of 20-11.
