BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team used a 59-34 rebounding edge to earn its fourth victory of the year Thursday evening, with an 80-62 win over Johnson & Wales University.
The Hawks used their height to their advantage, holding a +25 edge in rebounds, including grabbing a season-high 29 offensive boards. In addition to Roger Williams' intensity on the glass, the Hawks also utilized its depth throughout the contest, registering 36 points from the bench while the Wildcats got all of their scoring from the starters.
The Wildcats got the first score of the game with Marina Millian (Chester, N.Y.) putting in a layup. Early on, Johnson & Wales hung in the game with Roger Williams, coming back from a 9-4 hole to take a brief 12-11 lead on a three by Kaitlyn Lefort (Pawtucket, R.I.).
The Hawks would respond with a three-minute possession, highlighted by four offensive rebounds by Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.). Eventually, Ryan Weekes (Worcester, Mass.) would come away with a layup for the Hawks to put RWU on top by one. That bucket would spark a 13-0 run over the 13-0, five-minute run that put the Hawks up by 12.
From there, the Hawks maintained its double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game. Roger Williams entered the break on top 46-24 and never let the lead dip below 20 until Morgan Wilson (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) knocked down the Wildcats' last shot of the game to make it an 80-62 final score.
Four Hawks scored in double figures, including Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) with 11 and Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) and Carly Spagnola (Millbrook, N.Y.) with ten each. Senior Sara Morris (Topsham, Maine) came off the bench and scored a season-high ten points with six rebounds and two assists. Weekes added eight points and ten boards.
Millian led all scorers with 30 points in the game to go along with seven rebounds and five steals for Johnson & Wales. Wilson stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, nine rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and three steals.
Roger Williams (4-1) heads up to Brandeis University Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference matchup, while Johnson & Wales (1-3) hosts Mitchell College Saturday, also at 1:00 p.m.
