ORLANDO, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team split a pair of games in the 2010 opener Monday morning, taking the first game against Macalester College 2-0, then falling 3-8 to Polytechnic University of New York.
Against Macalester, Sophomore Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) provided all the offense that the Hawks would need, going 2-for-3 with a home run and both of the Hawks' RBIs. Senior captain Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) also added a pair of hits in four at-bats.
Sophomore pitcher Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) earned the win in the game, tossing a complete game three-hitter, striking out nine batters in the process.
In the second game versus NYU-Polytechnic, senior pitcher Alexandra Sera (Newtown, Mass.) took the loss, allowing eight runs in the game. Making her debut in the circle was freshman Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.), who pitcher two innings of scoreless relief.
Caprice added three more hits in the game, to finish the day 5-for-8 at the dish. Pirez homered for the second straight game, in addition to drawing a walk.
Roger Williams (1-1) will take on The College of Wooster and Smith College tomorrow morning, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
