Men's Lacrosse downed by Elizabethtown

The RWU Men's Lacrosse team suffered a 13-5 loss in Pennsylvania Wednesday at Elizabethtown College. The Hawks found themselves down just two at halftime, but the Blue Jays scored four goals in the third and fourth quarters to pull away for the win.

The Hawks (1-2 overall) jumped to a 1-0 lead just 1:19 into the game on a goal by junior Jim Turenne (Bristol, R.I.), but Jon Day scored just over a minute later to knot the score at 1-1. The Blue Jays (2-2) took the lead for good on a goal by Shawn Corcoran with 4:43 left in the first quarter, and led 3-2 at the end of the period as Cory Boushell and Austin Fehringer (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) exchanged goals in the final 90 seconds.

Corey Toby and Aaron Weber scored 35 seconds apart to give the Blue Jays a 5-2 lead midway through the second quarter, but junior Drew Smith (Blue Point, N.Y.) of Roger Williams scored a man-up goal with 1:34 left in the first half as Elizabethtown carried a 5-3 lead to intermission.

The Blue Jays took control in the third quarter, scoring four of the game's five goals to build a 9-4 lead. Weber scored five minutes into the quarter to extend Elizabethtown's lead to 6-3 and Derek Neiheiser scored with 3:11 left to push the Blue Jays on top 7-3. Weber scored his third goal of the game with 55 seconds left in the quarter as Elizabethtown went on top 8-3, but Rian Kearney (Duxbury, Mass.) answered with 41 seconds left to trim the Blue Jay lead to 8-4.

From there, Greg Kenneally took over the offensive production for the Blue Jays as he scored with 2.7 seconds left in the third quarter for a 9-4 Elizabethtown lead, then scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter at 13:51 and 5:42 as the Blue Jays went ahead 11-4. Rob Andreozzi (Bristol, R.I.) scored a man-up goal for the Hawks with 4:35 left for their final goal of the day, and the Blue Jays closed out the scoring on goals by Kenneally with 3:19 left and Sean O'Neill with 1:50 to go.

Elizabethtown finished with a 44-34 advantage in shots over Roger Williams, and collected 46 ground balls to 30 for the Hawks. Roger Williams went 2-for-4 with the man advantage, while the Blue Jays went scoreless in two opportunities.

Brent Campbell went 12-for-21 in faceoffs for the Blue Jays and gathered a team-high five ground balls, while Toby and Mike Kenneally each added four ground balls and Chris Day caused three turnovers. Fehringer led the Hawks with five ground balls and went 9-for-21 at the faceoff dot against Campbell.

Hunter Malick relieved Brendan Corcoran, who finished with 16 saves, after the Blue Jays' 11th goal and made one save over the final 5:42, while Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) finished with 16 saves in goal for the Hawks.

RWU looks to rebound from the loss Tuesday when it travels to Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., for a 4 p.m. contest.
