CAPE CORAL, Fla. - On the third day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, the Roger Williams University Softball split once again. The Hawks were defeated by Salem State 0-8 but were able to bounce back from their loss and take a 6-5 win against Stevens Institute of Technology.
Salem State held the Hawks from getting into a groove offensively. Solid pitching by the Vikings led to RWU only getting two hits in the game. While Salem State held the Hawks from scoring, they clinched three runs in the 2nd, which proved to be all Salem State would need.
Already leading by three, a three-run home-run from Taylor Orlando in the 3rd doubled the Vikings' advantage to take a 6-0 lead over the Hawks. They would add two more in the 5th inning toward the win.
Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and Madison Martines (Framingham, Mass.) had the only hits of the day for the Hawks. Sophomore Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) took the loss, allowing all eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in five innings.
In the second game, Hawks' sophomore pitcher Jacyln Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) held Stevens Institute scoreless until the 6th inning. Though Stevens mounted a late rally. the Hawks were able to keep the Ducks at bay and pull off the close win.
The Hawks placed their first score on the board when Burke singled in classmate Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) in the 3rd inning. Roger Williams stretched the lead in the 5th when Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) homered to bring in three runs. The Hawks added two more in the sixth with RBI doubles by Martines and senior Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.).
However, Stevens responded in the bottom of the sixth and placed four runs on the board. The Ducks continued to fight in the 7th inning by bringing home another run to pull within one. In the end, the Hawks were able to fight off their advances and seal their 6-5 win.
Doolin picked up the win, going the distance and allowing five runs (one earned) with a season-high ten strikeouts. Sophomore Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Roger Williams (5-3) takes on Fitchburg State and SUNY New Paltz on Friday afternoon in the final day of spring training.
