Softball sweeps Anna Maria in TCCC opener

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Softball team began play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with two wins against Anna Maria College Wednesday afternoon, winning by the score 6-2 and 6-3.

In the first game, Anna Maria got the scoring going early with an RBI double by Jill Hurley (Worcester, Mass.) to bring in Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) in the top of the first. Samantha Putis' (Charlton, Mass.) RBI single would follow later in the inning, scoring Hurley.

Roger Williams managed to get one of the runs back in the second when Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.) brought in Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) with a base hit of her own. In the next inning, the Hawks tied the game when Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) scored on a base hit by Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Sereti then drew a bases-loaded walk to give RWU the lead. The one-run RWU advantage lasted until the sixth inning, when the Hawks added six more runs on the board to go up by four.

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) earned the win, allowing two runs on nine hits and a walk in seven innings. Pirez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Sereti had a hit and two RBI.

Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) took the loss, tagged for six runs (four earned) in six innings. Alyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) and Michelle Blackler (Ashland, Mass.) each went 2-for-3 for Anna Maria.

The second game started out strongly in the Hawks' favor, as RWU did all its damage in the bottom of the first. The Hawks brought ten batters to plate and scored all six of their runs in the frame. Leadoff hitter Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) was the first to score, coming in on Castro's sacrifice fly. Laura McConnell (Lexington, Mass.) scored the final run of the inning, coming down from third on a double steal.

The AMCATS halved the deficit in the top of the third with three runs in the inning. Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.) scored on an RBI single by Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.). Emily Nugent (Worcester, Mass.) would later score sacrifice fly by Moroski, followed by Boyda taking advantage of a rundown between first and second to add the third run of the game for Anna Maria.

The AMCAT offense would be held in check from there, as Anna Maria was held to only three hits over the final three innings, as RWU held on for the win.

Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) picked up the win, giving up three runs in seven innings. Pirez, Teves, and Sereti each contributed a hit, an RBI, and a run scored in the game.

Nicole Hackenson (Mendon, Mass.) suffered the loss, allowing all six runs (two earned) in the game. Boyda went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Mercurio had one hit in three trips with a run scored.

Roger Williams (8-4, 2-0 TCCC) travels to Coast Guard Academy tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. game, while Anna Maria (2-12, 0-2 TCCC) hosts Gordon College Saturday at noon.
