BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Softball team dropped under .500 in TCCC Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Curry College by the scores 4-0 and 8-3.
Unsuitable playing conditions on the softball field of Curry College led the game to be played at Sweeney Field on the campus of fellow Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology.
In the first game, Curry scored first in the bottom of the second when Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.) came in on Valarie LaSala's (Seaford, N.Y.) RBI groundout. The Colonels would plate runs in each of the third, fourth, and sixth innings.
For the Hawks, the team could not get anything going offensively. The team was held to only four hits in the game and was shutout for the third time this season.
Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, Mass.) tossed the complete game shutout for the Colonels, striking out six in the process. She also contributed a home run and two RBI in the game.
Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings. Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.), Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.), and Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) each had a hit in the game for RWU.
The Colonels opened up the game with a three-spot in the first, getting an RBI single from Carney and a two-run home run from Peters in the frame. Castro would put the Hawks on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly to bring in Caprice, but Curry would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Though Teves made it a 6-2 game in the fourth after coming around on a fielder's choice, Curry's two-run bottom half put the deficit at six. The Hawks would try to rally in the seventh on Teves' two-out RBI single, but ultimately fell short as a fly out to left ended the game.
Janelle Mayo (Worcester, Mass.) picked up the win, allowing three runs (one earned) in seven innings. Peters finished the game with two hits, two runs scored, and four RBI. Carney added two hits, two runs, and an RBI.
Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) took suffered the loss for RWU, tagged for all eight runs (seven earned) in the game. Caprice went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for RWU, with Teves and Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) chipping in with two hits apiece.
Roger Williams (8-10, 2-4 TCCC) will be at Regis College Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., while Curry (6-7, 2-0 TCCC) takes on Salem State also on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
