SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England College Men's Lacrosse team stayed perfect in The Commonwealth Coast Conference after posting a 16-6 victory over Roger Williams Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Bears improve to 6-3 overall while remaining unbeaten in the league with a 5-0 mark. The Hawks fall to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
With heavy rain in the region the last two days, today's game was moved to Golden Bear Stadium in Springfield because of an unplayable field at the RWU campus.
Western New England College used a balanced scoring attack as nine players scored goals. Sophomore midfielder Patrick White (Milton, MA) led the way with four goals and an assist. Junior attacker Joe O'Keefe (Branford, CT) also had a five-point outing with three goals and two assists. Senior attacker Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) added three goals and an assist.
Junior midfielders Anthony Monfredo (West Islip, NY) and Mike Santare (South Salem, MA), and sophomore attacker Curtis Serafini (Westford, MA) each contributed a goal and assist.
Roger Williams trailed by only 4-2 after junior attacker Drew Smith (Blue Point, NY) scored as the horn sounded to end the opening period.
Western New England College scored four more times to take an 8-2 advantage before Smith scored again to send the teams to intermission, 8-3. The Golden Bears put the game away with a six-goal third quarter for a commanding 14-4 lead after 45 minutes.
Smith finished with three goals and an assist while junior midfielder Logan Roebuck (Montgomery, NY) netted a pair of goals. Junior goalie Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, NY) stopped seven shots in three quarters. Junior midfielder Austin Fehringer (Rockville Centre, NY) had a nice game winning 16-of-24 face-offs with six ground balls.
WNEC senior defender Nick Zaleski (Somers, CT) picked-up six ground balls while his former Somers High School teammate sophomore goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) compiled seven saves.
WNEC next returns to action in a rematch of last year's TCCC Championship game, as the Golden Bears face Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. RWU travels to Weston, Mass., to face Regis College.
