Softball earns split in nighttime doubleheader with Gordon

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Softball team had its win streak halted at five with a split against Gordon College Tuesday evening, winning the first game 3-1 and dropping the second 3-4.

 

In the opener, Gordon put the first run on the board when Elizabeth Cheesman (Winslow, Maine) stole home after forcing the Hawks' hand on a double steal with runners at first and third. The lead lasted until the third, when Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) brought in Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) on an RBI single to tie the game at one apiece.

 

RWU would take a 2-1 advantage in the fourth on an RBI single by Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.), scoring Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.). Pirez would double in Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) two innings later as Roger Williams held on for its fifth straight win.

 

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) allowing a run on seven hits with six strikeouts in the win. Sereti and Caprice finished the game with two hits and an RBI each.

 

Hannah Lawrence (Somerset, Mass.) was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in six innings. Kristen Terry (Chalfont, Pa.) went 2-for-3 for Gordon, with Cheesman scoring the only run for the Scots.

 

In the nightcap, the Fighting Scots did all of its scoring in their first at-bat, with Kimberly Levinsky highlighting a four-run first inning with a two-RBI double. Staked with a lead, Emily Borden (Groton, Conn.) proceeded to keep the Hawk offense in check, holding Roger Williams without a run over the first three innings.

 

The Hawks would put their first score on the board in the fourth, as Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) came in from third on a misplayed ball in the infield. The rally continued in the fifth, with Caprice and Pirez scoring to bring RWU within one. In the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks were able to bring the tying run to second base with two outs, but the Scots induced a grounder to first to hold on for the win.

 

Bordon earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) in five innings of work, while Lawrence tossed two scoreless innings for the save. Cheesman, Levinsky, and Kerry McPartlan (Yonkers, N.Y.) each had a hit and a run scored for Gordon.

 

Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) suffered the setback, allowing all four runs on four hits in the game. Teves finished 3-for-4 with a run, while Caprice had two hits and a run scored.

 

Roger Williams (13-11, 5-5 TCCC) steps out of conference play Thursday when the team hosts Rhode Island College at 4:00 p.m. Gordon (12-9, 7-5 TCCC) hosts Endicott College Friday at 3:00 p.m.
