BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team dropped a non-conference game to in-state rival Rhode Island College 3-8 before a “No Contest” ruling wiped out the scheduled doubleheader.
Due to unsuitable playing conditions that could not be remedied in a sufficient amount of time, the umpires ruled that the second game of the doubleheader would not allowed to be played. As a result, the game culminated as a “No Contest” for both teams.
In the first game, RIC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, beginning with Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, Conn.) coming in on an infield single by Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, R.I.). In the next at-bat, Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0, followed by Kayla Jandreau scoring on a fielder's choice.
In the following inning, Jaci Lata (Lisbon, N.H.) put the Anchorwomen up by four on a heads-up play, gunning for home on a slow dribbler to first.
In the bottom of the second, Roger Williams got its first two batters on base via a single and error. After a sacrifice and strikeout, Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) smacked a two-RBI triple to left field to cut the Hawk deficit in half.
Rhode Island continued to slowly build up its lead with an RBI single by Kayla Jandreau and Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the fourth and fifth, respectively, to make it a 6-2 game.
Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) added one more run for Roger Williams in the bottom of the sixth, yet the Anchorwomen tallied two more in the seventh and set down the Hawks in order in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for the win.
Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, Mass.) earned the win, pitching four innings while allowing two unearned runs on five hits and striking out two. Amanda Berard (Swansea, Mass.) picked up her fourth save of the year, giving up one unearned run in three innings of relief.
Mattoon finished the game perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Lata went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, while Kayla Jandreau had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored.
Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) suffered the loss, allowing all eight runs (six earned) in seven innings on 12 hits with four strikeouts. Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Pirez had two hits in three at-bats.
Roger Williams (13-12) will travel to Regis College tomorrow for a 4:30 p.m. game, while Rhode Island College (15-4) hosts Keene State College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
