BRISTOL, R.I. – Wheaton College mounted a second-half rally Thursday afternoon to open the 2010 season over the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team, as the Lyons came back to win 2-1 over the Hawks.
Roger Williams took a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the game, when junior Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass.) served classmate Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) with a pass across the box to the middle. Pendleton fired a shot but was deflected by a Wheaton defender. The ball found its way back to Pendleton, who then scored on the deflected save to give RWU its first goal of the season.
In the final minute of the half, Wheaton freshman Kristina Braga (Lowell, Mass.) had an opportunity to tie the game at one apiece, after receiving a cross to the left side of the box, but hooked the shot wide left.
The Lyons would not wait long in the second period to knot up the score, as senior Emily Hough (Norwich, Vt.) slid a centering pass through the middle for sophomore Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H.), who came in with a hard shot to the right side of the net for the equalizer in the 48th minute.
Seven minutes later, Wheaton would take the lead for good, when sophomore Samantha Cronin (Wethersfield, Conn.) corner kicked to Hough in the middle. Hough then passed it along to senior Alessia Viscomi (Newton, Mass.), who put in the go-ahead score for Wheaton.
Roger Williams had a couple of opportunities to send the game into extra time, but could not convert. A crossing opportunity in the 85th minute was negated by foul, followed by a shot by sophomore Maddy Howard (Medfield, Mass.) in the 87th minute on a free kick that just hooked right.
Freshman Kerry Condon (Whitman, Mass.) earned the win for Wheaton, playing the second half for the Lyons in relief of junior Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, R.I.). Condon had two save, while Leddy made five.
For the Hawks, sophomore Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y.) took the loss, making two saves though allowing both goals. In addition, junior Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) had three shots on goal.
Roger Williams (0-1) will head to Springfield College Saturday for a 7:15 p.m. game, while Wheaton (1-0) will be at Worcester State College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
