Women’s Volleyball sweeps tri-match

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball picked up two wins Saturday afternoon against Gordon College and Coast Guard Academy, defeating the Fighting Scots 3-0 (25-7, 27-25, 25-15) before beating Coast Guard 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23). The win for the Hawks is their first win against Coast Guard since 1987. Coast Guard beat Gordon 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-9) in the middle match.

In the first match against Gordon, the Hawks jumped out to an early 8-2 lead before extending it to 14-7. Roger Williams would then close the set on an 11-0 run for the 25-7 win.

In the second set, Gordon went ahead early, turning a 3-2 lead into a 15-6 advantage. The Hawks would rally back to tie the match at 20. Gordon came back to go ahead 25-24 and nearly took the set, but the Hawks called a timeout to regroup and scored the final three points to win the set 27-25.

The third set saw both teams trade points before the Hawks went on top 10-7. Roger Williams stretched the advantage to 20-12 before winning the match with a 25-15 win.

Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) led the Hawks with nine kills, while Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) and Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.) added five kills each. Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) had 29 assists and ten digs, while Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) added 12 digs and four aces.

Against Coast Guard, the first set was a back-and-forth affair until Coast Guard broke a 16-16 tie with four straight points to go up 20-16 and win 25-20. The second set saw Coast Guard jump out to an early 7-0 lead on strong serving by Samantha Marmolejo.  Roger Williams would rally back to tie it at 12 apiece before taking a 14-13 lead. Both teams traded point before the Hawks came ahead to win 25-23.

In the third set, Coast Guard broke a 3-3 tie with a 4-0 run. The Bears kept their lead narrow lead until a tie at 19-19. With the score tied at 21, Coast Guard scored four straight points and appeared to be headed to a 2-1 lead before the Hawks closed the set on a 5-0 run to win the set 26-24.

The fourth set again began back-and-forth, with the Hawks taking an early lead. The Bears would come back and go on top 20-16.  Roger Williams ultimately took a 21-20 lead, followed by both teams trading points. The Hawks would eventually win the match by a 25-23 score.

Torpey led the Hawks with 14 kills along with five digs. Hancock added nine kills and two  blocks, while Danna McDonald (Santa Monica, Calif.) finished with 17 digs and six kills. Lebowitz added 28 assists and 12 digs, with Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.) chipping in with 15 digs.

Roger Williams hosts Curry on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
