Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Logan Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the game with 3:29 remaining to pull the RWU Men's Lacrosse team to within one of Amherst College Thursday afternoon at Meister-Kavan Field on the campus of Brown University, but the Hawks could not complete the comeback as junior Alex Fox (Garden City, N.Y.) tacked on the game's final goal at 2:24 to give the Lord Jeffs the 13-11 victory.

Roebuck's final goal marked the Hawks' third-straight tally of the fourth quarter after entering the period down 12-8. Senior Drew Smith (Blue Point, N.Y.) nearly tallied his fourth goal of the game with 2:56 remaining to knot the game at 12-12, but his shot clipped the inside of the right post and fired across the goal mouth and harmlessly out of bounds along the left sideline. Amherst regained possession and 32 seconds later scored, putting an end to all of RWU's momentum.

Amherst junior Cole Cherney (Chappaqua, N.Y.) led all players with seven goals on the day, missing on just three of his 10 shots. He jump-started the Lord Jeffs in the second half after the two teams entered the break tied 6-6. Cherney scored three of Amherst's first four goals of the third quarter to move it ahead, 10-7. After the teams traded goals less than a minute apart, Cherney finished the period with an unassisted marker just 24 seconds before the horn to increase Amherst's lead to 12-8.

Junior Justin Leddy (Sea Girt, N.J.) began the RWU comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring with 10:56 remaining. He finished the game with a team-high five points, including three assists. Sophomore Ian Powers (Shrewsbury, Mass.) completed his hat trick with 6:05 on the clock before Roebuck and Fox traded goals to finish the game.

Hawks senior goalkeeper Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) played a strong game in net making 16 saves on the day. Amherst junior Sam Jakimo (Woodbury, N.Y.) recorded eight saves. Amherst finished with a slight edge in ground balls, 37-33, turnovers, 14-18, and face-offs won, 15-12, while both teams went 0-for-3 on extra-man opportunities.

With the win Amherst improves to 2-1 this season, while RWU falls to 0-3. Amherst returns to NESCAC play Saturday hosting Connecticut College at 1 p.m. RWU begins TCCC action on the road at Biddeford, Maine against the University of New England at 3 p.m.
