BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team was shut out in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon, as the nationally-ranked #12 Bears of Coast Guard Academy defeated the Hawks by the scores of 5-0 and 8-0.
Hayley Feindel (River Ridge, La.) held the Hawk offense in check in both games of the doubleheader, tossing 12 of the 13 innings combined in both games. She struck out 24 batters combined while holding RWU to only three hits on the day.
In the opener, Kaitlin Ward (Saline, Mich.) led off the second inning with a single, scoring three batters later on an RBI hit by Jamie Kim (Irvine, Calif.) The Bears tacked on their final two runs of the game. Megan Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) also scored in the inning on a wild pitch to put the Bears up 2-0.
Coast Guard would put three more runs on the board in the fifth inning, two of which came on a two-RBI double by Amanda Frederick (Lebanon, Ohio).
Feindel earned the complete game shutout for Coast Guard, striking out 14 while allowing one hit. Frederick finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI while Cook was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) took the loss for the Hawks, giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits in the complete game. Rachel Ehrlich (Southport, Conn.) had the sole hit for the Hawks in the game, a single through the left side in the third.
In the nightcap, Devin Felleman (New Port Richey, Fla.) began the game with a walk and would eventually come around to score on an RBI double by Frederick. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Frederick scored in the next at-bat on Holli Bastinck's (Wayne, N.J.) groundout to second.
Holding a 2-0 lead, Coast Guard added one more in the second, with Stacia Sarwinski (Grove, Okla.) coming in from third on a double steal attempt that was nullified by Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) throwing out Cook at second.
The Bears tacked on two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to take an eight-run lead. They would hold RWU scoreless in the bottom half to win the shortened game.
Feindel picked up her second win of the day, striking out ten batters in six innings. Frederick was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Cook added two hits and two RBI.
Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) suffered the loss, tagged for five runs (four earned) in five innings. Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) pitched the sixth, giving up three runs (two earned). Tierney and Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Conn.) each singled in the game for the Hawks.
Roger Williams (1-11) takes on the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on Thursday, while Coast Guard (16-0) puts its undefeated record on the line at Springfield on Friday.
