Rain holds Softball to one game, gets win against UMass-Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth's Softball team fell to visiting Roger Williams University, 4-0, in a rain-shortened non-conference game that was scheduled as a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the UMass-Dartmouth Athletic Complex.

The teams played through five innings in the first game, and the second game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The first inning proved to be all the Hawks needed to take down the Corsairs. Roger Williams opened the game with their first four batters reaching base. A sacrifice fly by freshman infielder Rachel Ehrlich (Southport, Conn.) plated the Hawks first run. With two outs, junior pitcher Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) blasted a three-run home run, giving Roger Williams a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

The Corsairs had runners in scoring position during the second and fourth inning but failed to bring them home. Junior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, Mass.) had the lone hits for UMD, going 2-for-2 with a single and a double.

Doolin (5-4) pitched five scoreless innings for the Hawks, surrendering only two hits with five strikeouts.

UMD junior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (3-4) (Raynham, Mass.) threw five innings, giving up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

The Corsairs are now 3-8, while Roger Williams improved to 7-12.  UMD will return to action when they host Keene State in a doubleheader Saturday. Roger Williams will host Regis in a doubleheader Saturday.
