Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. – Roger Williams University's Women's Lacrosse midfielder Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) set a school record for goals scored in a single game with nine goals while also dishing out two assists leading the Hawks past the New England College Pilgrims 24-13 Saturday afternoon.
Halliday breaks the previous RWU record of eight goals in a single game held by Kasey Beckwith '10 and junior Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) Beckwith first set the mark against New England College almost exactly one year ago in an 18-10 win on April 15, 2010. Delia tied the mark last Wednesday in a 22-12 win against Salve Regina University.
With the win the Hawks improve to 10-5 overall and 7-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The loss drops the Pilgrims to 3-11 on the season and 2-8 in TCCC play.
NEC would net the first two goals of the afternoon, including one by Emily Kuchta (Norwalk, Conn.) and another on a free position shot from Amanda Naimie (York, Maine). Roger Williams' Danielle Neagle (Avon, Conn.) would get the Hawks on the board four minutes into the game as she would put in a pass from Delia.
The Pilgrims would go up 3-1 thanks to another goal by Kuchta but Roger Williams would respond as Halliday would score her first two goals of the afternoon knotting the game at 3-3 at the 21:42 mark. The two teams would exchange goals before NEC's Eleni Hatsis (Norwalk, Conn.) would net three straight goals putting the Pilgrims up 7-4.
Roger Williams would turn up the offensive pressure midway through the opening half as the Hawks would score 11 goals in the final 16 minutes building a 15-7 lead. NEC would get a goal back in the final seconds of the half as Amanda Kennedy (Tewksbury, Mass.) would score an unassisted goal sending the Pilgrims into halftime trailing 15-8.
The Hawks would continue the offensive onslaught in the second half opening with six goals, including two from Halliday, to extend their lead to 22-8. NEC would get two goals from Naimie but the Pilgrims would be unable to contain the Hawks as they would get scores from Halliday and Alli Berno (St. Albans, Vt.) keeping the game out of reach up 24-10 with six minutes left in regulation.
NEC would muster the final three goals of the game but it would not be enough as Roger Williams would go on to capture the 24-13 victory.
Roger Williams finished the game out shooting NEC 40-28. Delia finished with three goals and four assists, while Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) chipped in three goals and had three assists.
Picking up the win in goal for Roger Williams was Justine Sullivan (Norwell, Mass.) who finished with eight saves. In goal for NEC was Caroline Doherty (Miller Place, N.Y.) who recorded nine saves
NEC returns to action on Monday, April 18 when they host non-conference opponent Daniel Webster College. Roger Williams will host conference leading Endicott College on Tuesday, April 19.
