Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team had its conference win streak halted at four, as they crashed to a 10-9 defeat against rivals Gordon College on Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field.
The Fighting Scots improve to 6-4, 5-0 within The Commonwealth Coast Conference, while RWU drops to 4-4, 4-1 TCCC.
Jim Turenne (Bristol, R.I.) fired past Gordon 'keeper Houston Zemanski (Annapolis, Md.) 2:53 into the game to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Just 28 seconds later, Drew Smith (Bayport, N.Y.) had his first goal of the day, doubling the hosts' advantage. The teams would then trade goals, as Drew Beck (Cross River, N.Y) and Wes Chittick (Glenside, Penn.) scored for RWU and Gordon, respectively, before the first quarter ended 3-2 in favor of the hosts.
However, despite starting brightly, Roger Williams would soon find themselves behind, as Dan Utz (Rochester, N.Y.) beat Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) in notching his second of the game with 11:38 left in the half. Logan Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) deadlocked the game at four-all prior to Jeff Ryan (Gillette, N.J.) restoring his team's one-goal advantage. Jeremy Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) and Utz extended the Fighting Scots' lead to three before Logan Roebuck pulled one back for the Hawks. The RWU midfielder's tally would be the last of the half, as Gordon went into the break two goals to the good.
Roger Williams came flying out of the traps in the second half, getting back on level terms through Justin Leddy (Sea Girt, N.J.) and Beck. However, Gordon wasn't to be deterred, as Adam Quinn (Gloucester, Mass.) fired in two quick tallies to put his team back on top, 9-7. Despite the Hawks being held scoreless the rest of the third quarter, Logan Roebuck started the fourth quarter off well, grabbing a goal to make it a one-goal game. Chittick would score again with 6:05 left, restoring the Fighting Scots' two-goal cushion. Though Smith's tally with 1:44 left gave RWU a glimmer of hope, it wasn't to be their day, as Gordon ran out the clock on their fifth straight win.
The Hawks were led by Roebuck's three goals, while Gordon's top scorer was Utz and Chittick with the same number of tallies. Zemanski earned 13 saves in the win, while Tyler Roebuck stopped 11 shots in the defeat.
Roger Williams is next in action on Wednesday at Salve Regina at 7:00 p.m., while the Scots host Western New England College next Saturday at noon.
