Women’s Soccer shuts out Lions for first win on the year

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team picked up its first win of the 2011 season Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene College.

In the 16th minute, Maddy Howard (Medfield, Mass.) took advantage of a loose ball in the upper right of the box and planted it into the left side of the net to put the Hawks on top 1-0. In the 38th minute, Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) placed a long ball through the middle, finding Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) Noel would get past the Lions' keeper for the goal and a 2-0 Hawk lead.

The 2-0 lead for the Hawks held until the 76th minute, when RWU tacked on one more score. Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) served up a cross to Tory Benoit (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who fired a shot at Lion keeper Lisa Clark. Though Clark made a great point-blank save, the ball got away from her and Benoit was able to corral the loose ball and put in the shot for a 3-0 Hawk advantage.

Less than three minutes later, Benoit added her second score of the game and her first multi-goal game of the season. Benoit fielded a cross from Alexa Maher (Hopewell, N.J.) on the left side of the field and nailed a shot into the right corner for a four-goal Hawk advantage.

Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) made four stops on the day to earn her first collegiate victory. Eastern Nazarene netminder Clark made nine stops on the day, including a stellar save in the 25th minute on a shot by Jessica Reade (North Yarmouth, Maine) on a potential breakaway.

“It was a very exciting game for the fans today,” said Head Coach Tim Moody. “Both teams went on the attack. We could have scored four goals in the first 15 minutes. Had we been a bit more clinical in front of the goal we could have wrapped up the game very early on. We were rewarded for the continued pressure and quality attacking play with two goals before the half and we doubled our efforts with two more in the second.

At halftime we talked about areas we needed to get into to convert our chances and that is what we did. We were very happy with our build up play and our defensive unit keeping a clean sheet.

It was great to open our season at home on our brand new turf field with a win. I believe we are going to play very well here with the support of our fans that come to watch us play an entertaining brand of soccer.”

Roger Williams (1-2-1, 1-0-0 CCC) travels to Clark University on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game. Eastern Nazarene (3-2-0, 0-1-0 CCC) hosts UMass-Dartmouth Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
