Women’s Soccer shoots to win over Nichols

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – A strong offensive attack helped the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Nichols College Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup.

The Hawks attempted 32 shots on the day at the Bison, 17 of which were on goal. Conversely, Nichols only attempted five shots total in the game.

Despite being outshot over the course of the game, Nichols held the lead early in the goal on a goal in the ninth minute. Julie Monroe (Whitman, Mass.) put up a corner kick which found the chest of Laurel Houle (Brooklyn, Conn.). After passing back to Jennifer Reichert (Pepperell, Mass.), Reichert put a shot to the upper left corner for the Bison's score.

The Hawks would come back to tie the game in the 32nd minute, with Tory Benoit (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hooking a pass from the left side to the middle of the field and finding Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.). Fusaro would beat the Bison defender on her and knock in the game-tying goal.

In the 59th minute, Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass.) chipped in a shot over the outstretch hand of Nichols keeper Maureen Lynch to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later, Kristen Tetreault put in a loose ball on a save from a Fusaro shot. With the goal, the Hawks would gain a two-goal lead that they would not give up.

Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) would only need to make one save in the game for the win. Lynch would make 14 saves for Nichols in the loss.

“We were very confident going into today's game,” said Head Coach Tim Moody. “We have been playing well all over the pitch, getting the ball in the right areas and had we finished like we can, it could have been a very high score today. But to give Nichols credit; they scored first. That just spurred us on I felt and it was just a matter of time before we hit the back of the net. We hit the post, two goals were called back for offside, our crosses were tantalizing and we had a good shout for a penalty kick.

“It was great to see goals coming from all areas and different players with Laurin Pendleton unavailable for selection, everybody has stepped up to share the work load. We will continue to cause teams problems with our attacking style of play and with some luck get the results we are looking for this season.

“The support again at our games has been first-class, which is great to see and hear during the matches. It gives us an edge against the opposition when we get this great backing and positive reinforcement from the fans watching in the bleachers.”

Roger Williams hosts MIT on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., while Nichols travels to Becker Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
