Babson shuts out Women’s Soccer

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer could not pick up its first win of the season, as the Hawks were defeated by Babson College Sunday afternoon by a 3-0 score.

First-year forward Jessica DiPhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) recorded a hat trick helping lead Babson to the Junior Amy Festa (Medfield, Mass.) added two assists, while sophomores Carley Martyniak (Foxboro, Mass.), and Mika Cucullo (South Salem, N.Y.) each added one assist to help the Beavers earn their first win of the 2011 season.

DePhilippo opened the scoring just over five minutes into the contest, collecting a cross from Festa in front of the net and beating Hawks keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.). Martyniak started the play carrying the ball through the midfield before finding Festa on the left wing to help set up the goal. The Beavers, who led 1-0 at halftime, continued to pressure Roger Williams throughout the early portion of the second half, and were rewarded with in the 69th minute. DePhilippo was on the receiving end of another great service by Festa, this time beating Jaques to the ball in the air and heading it into the open net for a two-goal bulge. Less than nine minutes later, DePhilippo capped the scoring, taking a pass from Cucullo, and tucking the ball inside the far post for the final margin.

Babson's senior goalkeeper Lisa Wojnar (Bellaire, Texas) was terrific again, making six saves to record her first shutout of the season and tenth of her career. Her best save of the day came in the 73rd minute, diving to her right to deny Taryn Roussel's (Ivoryton, Conn.) blast following a corner kick to preserve the Beaver lead.

“No question, our best performance over 90 minutes, we played to strengths, things that we had worked on and were great to watch when we had the ball,” said Head Coach Tim Moody. “But we couldn't find a way to put the ball in the back of the net today, we played with great spirit, quality and on another day and a little bit of luck we score early and win the game comfortably. They defended well and took their chances.

“The attitude of our players has been outstanding in our last three games and I expect us to break out very soon and put together the complete package. So we are very happy with our progress and the direction we are going and cannot wait for our next game on Saturday. With it being our home opener I expect a good crowd and a good performance to match it with it being on our brand new turf field. Everyone is looking forward to an entertaining game.”

Roger Williams returns to action next Saturday, September 10, when they open up their Commonwealth Coast Conference slate, hosting Eastern Nazarene College at 1:00pm. Babson will play their third-consecutive home game on Wednesday, September 7, as they host Salem State College in a 4:00pm game at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
