Men’s Basketball gives Gordon seventh straight loss

WENHAM, Mass. - The Fighting Scots' Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) woes continued tonight, as the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball claimed a 61-55 victory to sweep the regular season series and move the Scots to 6-13 overall, 5-7 in conference play. With the win Roger Williams improves to 12-7 overall, 8-4 in the CCC.

After a series of missed opportunities on both ends of the court, Roger Williams got the scoring started when Adam Cook (Manasquan, N.J.) hit a three at the 17:56 mark for the early lead. The Hawks would maintain that lead, building it to as many as 10 after seven minutes of action. Determined to battle back, the Scots closed the gap using an offensive surge of their own to make it a one-point game (25-24) in favor of the Hawks with just over three minutes left in the period.

Though the Scots would erase the gap at several points over the remaining minutes, it wasn't until a jumper from David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) with 37 seconds left that they were able to overtake the lead for the first time to head into the break up by two (31-29).

The opening minutes of the second half proved to be a grudge match for the lead, with both teams trading off but neither able to establish a comfortable advantage. But the Scots went cold in the final nine minutes, as they converted just once more on the offensive end, allowing the Hawks to swoop in and steal the six-point win.

Roger Wiliiams' effort was well-balanced, as Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) posted an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double, Joseph Henry (Medway, Mass.) led his team with 13 points, Mike Engemann (Red Bank, N.J.) recorded 11 points, seven rebounds, and Cook finished the night with 10 points.

Dempsey led all scorers with 17 points to go with eight boards, while Cooper Meyer (Manito, Ill.) contributed nine points in the outing.

The Scots look to snap their losing streak on Thursday, February 2 as they host the Nor'easters of the University of New England at 8:00 p.m. The Hawks look to make it five in a row as they host Curry on the same night at 8:00 p.m.
