Western New England downed by Women’s Soccer

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team picked up its second straight shutout with a 3-0 win over Western New England University Wednesday afternoon.

The victory keeps the Hawks in second place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 5-1-1 record and 8-5-2 overall. Western New England drops to 1-6-0 in the conference and 7-9-1 overall.

The Hawks held possession in their offensive half of the field for most of the first period. The Western New England offense struggled for much of the half, with Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) taking the only shot of the period for WNE.

Roger Williams would ultimately put up 12 shots in the period, but it would not be until the 38:57 mark when the Hawks tallied their first score. Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) placed a short pass to her right to Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.), who would then put the shot into the left corner to put RWU on top 1-0.

The Hawks would tack on one more in the final minute of the half. Lydon put up a corner kick into the box in the 44th minute, which led to a scrum for the ball. Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) would emerge with the ball at her foot, putting in a short shot with 25 seconds to play in the period and sending the Hawks into the half with a two-goal lead.

Roger Williams would add its final score of the game six minutes into the half. Jess Giglio (North Reading, Mass.) served a pass across the top of the box to a wide-open Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) on the left side. Noel fired a shot to the right corner to put RWU up 3-0.

The Roger Williams reserves would close out the rest of the half to preserve the shutout for RWU.

Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) needed only one save for her eighth win of the season. Briana Kubik (Blanford, Mass.) stopped five shots in the loss.

Roger Williams hosts the University of New England on Saturday during Homecoming Weekend. Western New England also has a home game on Saturday against Curry.
