KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team suffered a pair of losses Monday afternoon down in Florida, falling 0-1 in eight innings to Rutgers-Camden and 2-10 to Austin College.
Against Rutgers-Camden, both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel with Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) for the Hawks and Amanda Cassella for Rutgers-Camden. Both pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts and only six hits given up in the game.
The two squads would next an extra inning to decide the game after seven innings of scoreless play. In the top of the eighth, the Hawks managed to sacrifice Laura McConnell (Lexington, Mass.) over to third but could not bring her in to score. The bottom half of the inning saw the Raptors' Vicki D'Anduono come in from third on a suicide squeeze to get the win.
Doolin took the hard-luck loss, allowing that one run in 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts. She also had one of the Hawks' two hits on the day, with Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) notching the other single.
Cassella earned the win, tossing eight shutout innings for the Raptors with nine strikeouts. Jackie Leafey finished 1-for-4 with the game-winning RBI.
In the Austin game, the Kangaroos scored two unearned runs in the second and one more in the third for an early 3-0 lead. Natasha Stone (Harrison, N.Y.) brought in Kaitlyn Costa (Cranston, R.I) and Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) with a two-RBI single in the fourth to bring the Hawks within one.
Yet the Kangaroos scored five runs in the fifth to build their lead to six. They would score two more in the seventh to hold on for the win.
