Softball splits down in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball came away with a spilt in their two games played Wednesday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Montclair State University before defeating Daniel Webster College 7-0.

In the first game of the day for RWU, Montclair State notched runs in each of the third and fourth innings for the team's only scores of the day. The Hawks managed to scatter five hits throughout the game but were unable to plate any runners home.

Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) took the loss for the Hawks in the game, giving up both Red Hawk runs in four innings pitched. Kaitlyn Costa (Cranston, R.I.) finished the game 2-for-3. Lewis, Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.), and Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) each went 1-for-3.

The Hawks' bats came alive in the second game of the day. RWU began the game with RBIs from Lewis, Pirez, and Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.) added an RBI single in the second to add to the Hawks' lead. In the fourth inning, RWU tacked on three more runs to comfortably go up by seven.

Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) pitched five innings of scoreless ball with eight strikeouts to pick up the win. Castro, Costa, Pirez, and Lewis each had two hits in the game for the Hawks, with Pirez and Petrone each contributing two RBI and a run scored.

Roger Williams (2-5) closes out the Spring Break trip Thursday with games against Skidmore and Utica.
