KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University fell in its final two games of the Florida Spring Break trip, losing 2-1 to Skidmore University and 14-1 to Utica College in six innings.
In the opener, Skidmore grabbed the lead in the third inning on an RBI double to center to make it a 1-0 game. The Hawks would come back with a run in the fifth inning, with Molly Petrone scoring on an infield hit by Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.).
With the game tied at one, the Thoroughbreds got back-to-back singles to kick off the bottom of the seventh. After a sacrifice bunt and a pitching change, Skidmore was able to bring in the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) was tagged with the loss in the game, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing both Skidmore runs while striking out seven. Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) finished 3-for-3 at the plate while Castro was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In the second game of the day, Utica opened with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first for a quick 2-0 lead. The Pioneers would then score four more times in the fifth inning in increase their lead to six. Utica broke the game wide open in the sixth, scoring eight times for a commanding 14-0 lead. The Hawks were able to bring in one run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be all the team would get in the shortened game.
Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) suffered the loss, allowing two unearned runs in 3.2 innings. Castro finished with two hits in the game.
Roger Williams (2-7) travels to Coast Guard on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
