BRISTOL, R.I. – The luck of the Irish was with the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on St. Patrick's Day, as the Corsairs defeated the Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team 13-5.
The win for UMass-Dartmouth is the third straight for the Corsairs. They improve to 4-1 on the year. Roger Williams drops its second straight contest and now sits at 2-2 on the season.
UMass-Dartmouth dominated early on, scoring the first six goals of the game. Adam Niden (Walpole, Mass.) notched the first two in the opening quarter for the Corsairs. In the second period, Christian Roberto (Wakefield, Mass.), Nick Brett (Loudon, N.H.), and Connor Gaffney (Andover, Mass.) each scored in less than a minute to break open a 5-0 lead for UMass-Dartmouth.
Trailing 6-0, the Hawks finally got on the board with 5:47 to go in the first half on a goal by Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass.). Dan Klink (Nashua, N.H.) helped cut chip away at the deficit with a score in the final minute of the second quarter to make it a 6-2 game.
In the third quarter, Brett brought the Corsairs back up by six with two more goals in the opening two minutes. Klink and Drew Beck (South Salem, N.Y.) would put two more tallies on the board for RWU, but UMD closed the period with three straight goals.
Cameron Signorelli (Albany, N.Y.) put in a goal on the opening draw for the Hawks in the fourth quarter but that would be the final one on the day for RWU, as the Corsairs tacked on two more goals toward the win.
Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up the win for UMass-Dartmouth, saving 12 shots in the game. Brett finished with seven points on five goals and two assists. Gaffney added three goals and an assist, while Roberto and Niden each scored twice.
Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) took the loss for RWU, making three saves while giving up 11 goals. Klink had two goals while Ian Powers (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contributed two assists. Mitri Najjar (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had four caused turnovers for the Hawks, while Alan Williams won 11 face-offs with nine ground balls.
Roger Williams travels to Trinity College on Wednesday, while UMass-Dartmouth hosts Western Connecticut State on March 31.
