NEW LONDON, CONN. - The Roger Williams University fell to #17 nationally-ranked Coast Guard Academy Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader, losing 12-4 in five innings in the first game and 3-1 in the second.
Junior Catherine Walker picked up both wins on the mound as Coast Guard. Freshman Jesse Richardson was 4 for 4 in the opener with a homer and four RBI's including an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the eight run rule. Junior Holli Bastinck was 3 for 3 while sophomore Kaitlin Ward was 2 for 2 each with an RBI in the game one win.
Roger Williams scored twice in the top of the first on a two-run single by senior Kara Lewis. The Bears got one back in the home half on an RBI single by Richardson before the Bears erupted for five runs in the second with junior Stacia Sarwinski leading the inning off with a homer before Richardson added a two-run shot as the Bears took a 7-2 lead.
Walker scattered seven hits and allowed three earned runs while walking three and striking out five to get the win.
Sophomore Rachel Ehrlich (Southport, Conn.) had two hits in the opener for the Hawks. Junior Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) (0-4) took the loss as she lasted just 1 2/3 innings and allowed six runs, just two earned.
In the nightcap, Walker allowed just two singles and worked around eight walks allowing just the one run on a wild pitch in the fourth to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Coast Guard scored single runs in the first, second and third for a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Fellman homered to lead off the bottom of the first, freshman Chloe Harmon tripled to lead off the second and scored on ground out by Sarwinski before Bastinck's RBI single in the third.
Senior Maddie Buchert had two of the Bears seven hits in game two.
Senior Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) (0-2) went the distance for the Hawks allowing the seven hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out one.
Coast Guard improves to 11-5 overall while Roger Williams drops to 2-9 on the season.
