Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse (6-4, 3-1 CCC) drops their first Commonwealth Coast Conference match of the season to #16 Western New England (5-3, 3-0 CCC) in a goalkeeper's battle.
Outstanding saves was the theme of the game with Brewster Knowlton (Somers, Conn.) ending with 11 saves for the win and Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) stopping thirteen shots in the loss for RWU.
WNE was first to score at 10:11 in the first period on an assist from James Reardon (Longmeadow, Mass.) to Patrick White (Milton, Mass.). Just over a minute later Todd Carson (Pennington, N.J.) hooked up with Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass.) to put RWU on the board and even the game. Kirby Sundquist (Concord, Mass.) traded unassisted goals with WNE's White to bring the first period score to 2-2.
At 14:15 in the second period Corbett Harreys (Essex, Conn.) broke free to score an unassisted goal. Carson started two and half minute scoring frenzy on an assist from Nessa at 10:36 to square the game at 3-3. WNE responded immediately with White finishing on a pass from Corey Johnson (Maybrook, N.Y.) at 10:25. Fifty seconds later Patrick Holland tied it up with an unassisted goal at 9:35. Eighteen seconds later Johnson fired right back to give WNE the lead once again. White took a pass from Harreys to give the Golden Bears a 6-4 lead at half.
Halftime adjustment led to a scoreless third with Aubrey and Knowlton matching saves throughout the period.
At 5:33 in the fourth Adam Vorwald (South Setauket, N.Y.) found Carson who finished on his second score to cut the lead to 5-6. RWU had a good look in the closing seconds but Knowlton came up big for a final stop to secure the win for the Golden Bears.
Roger Williams hosts Endicott on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.at Bayside Field and Western New England travels to Biddeford, Maine to take on the University of New England on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
