QUINCY, Mass. - The Eastern Nazarene softball team dropped two games to Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon at Mitchell-McCoy Field. The Hawks took game one 2-0 and capped off the doubleheader with a 5-0 win in game two.
Freshman Carissa Cicolini (Methuen, Mass.) led the Lions in game one, going 1-2 with a walk. She broke RWU senior Jaclyn Doolin's (Miller Place, N.Y.) no-hitter in the seventh inning with two outs on the board, when she hit a double for ENC.
Doolin struck out seven Eastern Nazarene batters and walked one in her complete game one-hitter. The shut-out win brings her to 7-5 on the year.
Freshman Kori Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) took the loss for the Lions. Like Doolin, she K'd seven and allowed one to reach base on balls. Sorensen sits at 8-6, has thrown 12 complete games and owns a 1.88 ERA. Her 108 strikeouts put her near the top of the Commonwealth Coast Conference leader board.
Roger Williams' first run came in the second after back-to-back doubles from senior Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Rachel Ehrlich (Southport, Conn.). Lewis led off with one and Ehrlich batted her in to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
Three scoreless innings passed before RWU scored its second run, off of another Lewis double. No more runs would cross the plate as RWU secured its eighth CCC win.
Lewis led all players with her two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. Doolin proved her versatility, going 1-3 with a single in the fifth.
Eastern Nazarene got more production at the plate in game two, with three different players collecting hits, but it was not enough, as seven Hawks combined for ten knocks and took home the 5-0 victory.
The scoring started in the first, as Lewis registered on her third double of the day to score freshman teammate Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.).
Roger Williams tacked on another in the second, using a couple of two-baggers from senior Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) and freshman Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.) to go up 2-0 on ENC.
In the fourth, ENC had a shot to score after Cicolini walked and was moved to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by sophomore Abigail Moore (Sheridan, Calif.), but the Lions could not capitalize and took to the field for the fifth a batter later.
Freshman Olivia Tovar (Coarsegold, Calif.) singled in the fifth for the Lions but was left on first as the inning came to a close.
Lewis led off with a single in the sixth for Roger Williams. McConnell came in to pinch run and scored for the Hawks off of an RBI double by junior Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) to bring the game tally to 3-0.
The Hawks' squad added some extra cushion in the seventh, scoring two more runs off of three hits and three Lions errors.
The game ended with a three-up, three-down bottom of the seventh, with the final score reading 5-0.
Junior pitcher Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) snagged the shutout, throwing six innings for Roger Williams and allowing just three hits. Lewis came to the mound in the seventh and garnered her second save of the year, retiring three straight Lions' batters. Petrone, Atkinson and Lewis indexed two hits, respectively, for Roger Williams.
Senior Jamie Block (Pembroke, Mass.) threw a complete seven innings and gave up 10 hits. She struck out two and walked no one in the effort. With the loss, she drops to 0-4 in 2012. Sophomore Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.), Block and Tovar collected hits for the Lions.
Eastern Nazarene takes a short breather and will return to action on Monday against Western New England. The home doubleheader will begin at 3:00pm. Roger Williams will take on Univ. of New England Sunday at 9:30am in a CCC twinbill.
