BRISTOL, R.I. – The University of New England took two games of a doubleheader against the Roger Williams University Softball team Sunday morning, defeating the Hawks by scores of 5-2 and 11-3.
In the opener, UNE claimed the lead in the third inning via defensive miscues by the Hawks. The Nor'Easters took advantage of four errors by RWU in the inning to bring in Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) and Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) for the first runs of the game.
UNE tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run homer to left center by Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine), scoring herself and Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.).
Nor'Easter pitcher Kelly Reid (Nantucket, Mass.) flirted with a perfect game, retiring the first 16 batters in a row. Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) ended her bid with a one-out infield single in the bottom of the sixth. Pirez would later give the Hawks their first run of the game by scoring on a sacrifice fly by Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.). Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.) later came in on an RBI single by Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) to bring the Hawks within two.
UNE added one more in the seventh, with Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.) coming in from third on a suicide squeeze. RWU threatened to tie in the bottom of the inning, bring the tying run to the plate. Yet UNE held on in the end for the win.
Reid went the distance in the win, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Gott and Erin Grover each finished 2-for-4, while Gauger was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) took the loss for RWU, tagged for five runs (four earned) with seven Ks. Atkinson was 1-for-3 with an RBI while Petrone and Pirez each added a hit and a run scored.
In the second game, Grover and Gabrielle LaRoche (Deerfield, N.H.) both came in to score in the top of the first for a quick 2-0 lead. Yet the Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Pirez's two-run home run to deep center.
UNE grabbed the lead right back in the following with two more runs in the top of the second. Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) pulled the Hawks back within one with an RBI single but the Nor'Easters scored three runs in the fifth on a two-out, three-RBI double by Johnson to give them a 7-3 lead. Four more runs over the following two innings helped put the game out of the Hawks' reach.
Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) earned the complete game win for UNE. Gott went 4-for-5 in the game with a run scored. Casey Brigham (New London, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) took the loss, allowing four unearned runs in two innings of work. Atkinson and Pirez were each 2-for-4 with a run scored, with Pirez adding two RBI.
Roger Williams (13-16, 9-5 CCC) travels to Clark on Tuesday, while UNE (16-10, 8-4 CCC) hosts St. Joseph's on Tuesday.
