Western New England knocks out Softball from CCC Tournament

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team was eliminated by Western New England University Thursday afternoon from the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, as the Golden Bears won 11-2 in five innings.

After a scoreless first, Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the second on Maria Francese's (Hinsdale, Mass.) RBI single to score Barnes. Roger Williams would tie the game in the third inning, with Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) scoring on an RBI double by Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.).

It would be the fourth inning where Western New England broke the game open. The Golden Bears rapped eight hits in the inning while putting seven runs on the board to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Francese had the key hit with a three-run home run to right.

The Hawks got one run back in the following inning with Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) scoring on an RBI single by Castro. However, Western New England came back with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, Conn.).

The Hawks were only able to manage one hit in the fifth inning before the Golden Bears picked up the shortened win.

Lempicki picked up the win, allowing two runs in four innings with six strikeouts. She was also 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Francese finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and four RBI.

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing seven runs in 3.2 innings of work. Atkinson went 2-for-2 with a run, while Lewis finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Western New England fell 2-6 to Endicott in the following game, and concludes the year at 17-23. Roger Williams ends the season with a 19-23 record.
