Hawks Take Conference Opener Over Endicott

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - Roger Williams University (7-3) opened Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 3-0 victory (25-10, 25-16, 25-17) over Endicott College (1-7), today at Roger Williams University gymnasium.

After trading points for the first six rallies of the match, RWU pulled away to a 10-3 lead, forcing an Endicott timeout.  A play set up for Endicott middle blocker, Mackenzie Guerre (Carlsbad, Calif.) gave them a side out, but Endicott gave the ball right back to RWU with a blocking error.  At 14-6, with Emily Werth (Cheshire, Conn.) serving, RWU went on a four point run, including a Werth ace. Another Endicott timeout broke the momentum, but not for long. A kill by Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) and two aces by Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) put the score at 21-8, and then opponents traded points before RWU won set one, 25-10.

Set two was a game of errors on both sides of net, with each team earning only 7 kills each. Two RWU blocks and three RWU aces, two by Flaherty and one by Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.), helped give RWU the edge, 25-16.

Game three started off in a similar fashion with RWU jumping to a 9-1 lead, behind strong serving of middle attacker Andrea Gorman (Wilbraham, Mass.).  An Endicott timeout was followed by a RWU stuff block, before Endicott sided out on a Gorman service error.  A block, seven kills and an ace helped extend the RWU lead to 20-10, before Endicott made a run with 4 kills and a block of their own to cut the lead to five points.  But strong offense would bring RWU home, earning their last five points of the match on a kill by Brittany Bona (Scaraborough, Maine), two by Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.), and one each for Luczynski and Abby Cunningham (Catasaqua, Pa.) to finish 25-17.

Roger Williams continues conference play against Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday, September 18, in Quincy, Mass. at 7 p.m.
