Women’s Soccer wins in waning seconds of double OT

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.  Sophomore Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) scored with 12 seconds to play in the second overtime period gave Roger Williams University a 1-0 non-conference women's soccer victory over Keene State College on Saturday.

The winning goal was set up on a corner kick by junior Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) Tetreault tried to head the ball to the top of the goal.  The ball temporarily alluded KSC sophomore goalie Torrie Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.) who was finally able to grab it.  But the officials ruled the ball had crossed the goal line, giving the Hawks the victory.

Keene State, which outshot RWU 25-10, controlled play especially in the second half but couldn't finish.

Crenson made a pair of diving stops on Tetreault and junior Katie Lyndon (Riverside, R.I.) in the opening minutes of the game to keep the Hawks off the board.

The Owls took the play to Roger Williams in the second half, but were unable to get the ball past Hawk junior goalie Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.)

KSC misfired on three consecutive kicks midway in the half.  In the closing second of regulation, junior Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) was unable to connect with junior Kara Pavlidis (Lee, N.H.) who was in front of the net.

In the overtime, a shot by freshman Shannon Summers (Keene, N.H.) just sailed wide of the net and Pavlidis was unable to get ahead on a cross from junior Brittany Boscarino (Ellington, Conn.) with four second to go in the first overtime.

Crenson finished the game with three saves for Keene State (1-3).  Jaques stopped nine shots to post the shutout and give the Hawks (1-1-1) their first win of the season.

RWU head coach Tim Moody is a former assistant coach at Keene State.

“We prepared well and got the reaction we were looking for, with the best performance of the season,” said Head Coach Tim Moody. “We controlled the tempo of the game; we kept the ball, passed it well and created very good scoring opportunities.

“The weather wasn't good for the spectators, but the rain made the grass pitch slick and therefore, our passing game could flourish. I would say we had at least 60% possession during the game. The stats do not show a true reflection of the game. We hit the bar and the post, and the goalkeeper made some great saves. Keene State as the home team was always going to get a chance, but we defended as a team and when called upon did what we needed to do, to keep the ball out of the net.

“It was a huge improvement from Wednesday's game. The players were committed and did not want to return to Bristol without the win to match the performance. We did all the little things you must do and with a little bit of luck, got the goal in double overtime. We should have one in regulation; however we wanted to give the crowd its money's worth.”

“The weather conditions, as bad as they got, actually brought us closer together. The chemistry and team spirit we have on this team was for all to be seen. When we scored the winning goal on the corner, the players cleared the bench to join the celebration on the pitch.

“We deserved the road victory; we rang the bell.”

Keene State is at Middlebury College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.). Roger Williams hosts Clark University on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
